What Are Independent Medical Exams?
Independent medical exam is often referred to by the abbreviation IME. This is an important step in the personal injury claimant’s litigation. When the defense counsel or the insurance company designate a doctor to examine our client, you as a personal injury claimant are going to be examined by a physician in whatever specialty the injuries are. For example, if you broke your arm; an orthopedist. Neck pain or back pain; possibly a neurologist and an orthopedist. The defendants have a right to have their own doctor examine you and comment upon the condition that he or she finds, upon the prognosis, and also by causation in terms of were these injuries that person is claiming caused by the negligence or by the accident itself. It is an important step, and our clients are always well prepared to talk to the doctor to reveal certain information. Do not submit to any independent tests, for example, x-rays. Our office will guide any claimant right through the process of an IME.
